Our Story

In 2004, looking to transition to a slower pace of life, Colleen, Doug and our four year old son, Josh, moved from the suburbs of California to a small farm in North Carolina. Relocating from one coast to another and only having a few family members nearby, was challenging, but well worth it.  After several years of adapting to our environment, returning to college and changing careers, Colleen and Doug have returned to the show ring.  Obedience, confirmation and agility matches is where we spend our free time.

The Team

Colleen

With more than 30 years of hands-on experience in the veterinary and animal care fields, Colleen brings a rare depth of knowledge, skill, and passion to everything she does at SGR Dogs. Her professional journey began in veterinary medicine, where she spent over three decades working across multiple specialties. She held advanced certifications in EMERGENCY & CRITICAL CARE, INTERNAL MEDICINE, and ONCOLOGY, giving her an exceptional foundation in animal health, wellness, and medical decision-making. This extensive background ensures that every dog in her care is managed with the highest standards of health, safety, and ethical responsibility. In addition to her veterinary career. Colleen has been deeply involved in breeding, training, and showing of dogs and horses, successfully competing across a wide range of disciplines. Her breeding programs emphasize health testing, sound temperament, structural correctness, and purpose-driven pairing-whether for performance, companionship, conformation, or service work. Colleen is also proud to be actively involved in service dog work, partnering with SEMPER K9 ASSISTANT DOGS-for veterans to help provide highly capable dogs to those who have served our country. This mission-driven work reflects her commitment to providing well-bred, well-trained dogs to make a meaningful difference in Veterans’ lives. Alongside her animal-focused career, Ms. Goularte has spent over 10 years as a Registered Nurse in Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She holds a master’s degree in Nursing Education, further highlighting her dedication to evidence-base practice, teaching, mentorship, and lifelong learning. This dual background in both human and veterinary medicine uniquely positions her to understand critical care, physiology, behavior, and training from comprehensive perspective. Today, Colleen continues to expand her impact within the dog sport community. She owns and operates a dock diving poll, and hosts competitive events, supporting local and regional handlers in achieving their goals. She currently serves as President of Tarheel Canine Performance (UKC) and President of Mid-Atlantic Labrador Club (UKC). She will continue to evolve Sliding G Ranch into an all-inclusive Dog sports venue. Keep a look out for Agility and Coursing coming to SGR DOGS!

Josh

Joshua Goularte was raised on a working farm surrounded by dogs and horses, where he developed a strong work ethic and lifelong respect for animals. Growing up immersed in breeding, training, and performance environments gave him a solid foundation in animal care, facility management, and the daily operations of a multi-sport venue. Alongside his agricultural background, Joshua cultivated a strong passion for computer science, robotics, and engineering. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a degree in Electrical Engineering, bringing advanced technical knowledge and problem-solving skills to SGR Dogs. At SGR Dogs, Joshua is integral to dock diving operations, dog sport trials, and overall venue management. He oversees computer systems, electrical infrastructure, scoring and event technology, and supports the setup and execution of trials and dock diving events. As a Show Director, he helps ensure that events run efficiently, safely, and professionally for competitors, judges, and spectators alike. Joshua’s unique combination of farm-raised experience, engineering expertise, and hands-on involvement in dog sports makes him a key part of the SGR Dogs team and the success of its growing performance venue.

Doug

George Goularte is the foundation behind the growth and expansion of SGR Dogs and its dog sports venue. A dependable partner with an adventurous, solutions-driven mindset, George plays a critical role in transforming vision into functional, high-quality spaces for dogs and handlers alike. Professionally, George is a Respiratory Therapist, bringing a calm, detail-oriented approach to everything he does. His hands-on expertise began much earlier, having grown up in his family’s construction business and working as a contractor and carpenter since the age of 16. This lifelong background in building and problem-solving is instrumental as SGR continues to expand its sports offerings and facilities. George oversees construction, maintenance, and ongoing improvements across the property, supporting the development of the dock diving pool, training fields, and future expansions into agility, nosework, and coursing. His craftsmanship ensures that every structure is safe, durable, and designed with performance and functionality in mind. As SGR Dogs grows into a premier multi-sport venue, George’s reliability, skill, and unwavering support remain central to building a space where exceptional dogs, dedicated handlers, and an active community can thrive.
